A 40 year follow-up
study of Danish men at high and low risk for alcoholism
Since 1978 Joachim Knop has been involved in “the Danish Longitudinal High Risk Study of Alcoholism”, since 1990 as Principal Investigator. The study is a joint venture together with Dept. of Psychiatry, University of Kansas, USA.
The long term study is based on a birth cohort (born 1959 – 1961, n = 9000). A high risk group includes 223 sons of alcoholic fathers, while a low risk group includes 105 matched sons of non-abusing parents. The two risk groups have been examined at age 20, 30 and 40. In addition, available archival data cover: pregnancy, delivery, examination 1 year of age, school teacher ratings, military draft, dead and disease registries. In this way, many risk factors from pregnancy up to age 40 have been studied extensively.
The publication list from the study includes 63 peer-reviewed papers, oral presentations and book chapters.
